You just have to make sure you get your message right. But what works and what doesn\u2019t? To distill an answer into a quick list of <strong>\u201cdon\u2019t do this ever\u201d<\/strong> phrases, we turned to both experts on cold email and our own experience as we build Wiza.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These phrases are ineffective at best, and dishonest and or off putting at worst. Let\u2019s all write better cold emails.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>#1: \u201cHi, my name is Brooklin and I work at Wiza.\u201d&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Opening your email with the wrong focus is a good way to lose your prospects before they even finish the first line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/tLQSYnrLCGcKY\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The phrase shows your lead two things right off the bat:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>You\u2019ve done 0 research into them and their company.<\/li><li>You have 0 interest in personalizing your offer and pitch to the challenges they face.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You have 2 seconds to grab their attention. Make good use of it by making the first line about <em>them. <\/em>Drop the intro further down.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, you would have already followed or connected with them on social media, so the cold intro isn\u2019t always necessary.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>#2: \u201cWould you like to schedule a time to chat?\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dayana Mayfield, an cold email copywriter, is not a fan of jumping to the \u201cquick 15-minute call.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither are we, to be honest. Here\u2019s what Dayana has to say about this particular CTA.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"512\" height=\"186\" src=\"https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-1.png\" alt=\"cold email example 1\" class=\"wp-image-840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-1.png 512w, https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-1-300x109.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em>\u201cPeople should stop trying to go straight for requesting a call and instead ask something that starts a conversation.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dayana has a great alternative: ask a simple, yes\/no question as your CTA. Prospects will find it easier to respond, and you\u2019ll almost certainly see your engagement rate shoot up.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even when we do mention the possibility of a call, we make it less demanding and, ultimately, bring it back to how <em>we <\/em>can help <em>them<\/em> so that we <a href=\"https:\/\/drinkstrike.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strike<\/a> a chord.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>#3: \u201cI\u2019m following up on\u2026\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This one is less common but equally annoying. Including a line like this is a good way to grab a lead\u2019s attention, but it\u2019s generally dishonest (or misleading at best).&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Ben Hippeli calls it one of his \u201cInstant Delete\u201d phrases in cold email.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-2.png\" alt=\"cold email example 2\" class=\"wp-image-841\" width=\"451\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-2.png 512w, https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-2-300x220.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em>\u201cUnless I recognize who the email is coming from, I\u2019m deleting that email.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Save the \u2018follow up\u2019 for someone you\u2019ve truly already engaged with elsewhere.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>#4: \u201cI\u2019ve been following your stuff for awhile.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of bad cold emails coming off as disingenuous. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing turns off someone who receives 10+ cold pitches a day quite like this phrase \u2014 which is false 99% of the time. Victor Ijidola, a B2B content strategist, puts it as succinctly as possible.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"512\" height=\"112\" src=\"https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-842\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-3.png 512w, https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-3-300x66.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re pitching content marketers or making initial contact with high-level prospects, save this sentiment for when it\u2019s actually true. Steer away from gushing over their work unless you have been engaging on social channels ahead of outreach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>#5: \u201cLooking forward to hearing from you.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Intros are key, but the way you end a cold email can have a big impact as well. Check out what B2B growth hacker Patrick Hellstrom, has to say.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"512\" height=\"131\" src=\"https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-4.png\" alt=\"cold email example 4\" class=\"wp-image-843\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-4.png 512w, https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-4-300x77.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The phrase may seem innocuous. And it probably is, in most cases. But some prospects take issue with this outro for two reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>It brings the conversation back to <em>you <\/em>instead of keeping it on <em>them.&nbsp;<\/em><\/li><li>They\u2019re pointless words. They\u2019re not saying anything. They\u2019re moot (see what I did there?)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Point is, keep the focus on your prospect even as you sign off. Try something simple like \u201ctake care\u201d or a secondary CTA like \u201cThink it over and let me know\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>#6: \u201cSorry\u2026\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to be the Don Draper of sales, but you shouldn\u2019t resort to self-deprecation either.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid saying sorry. In any form.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\u201cSorry to waste your time\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cI know your time is valuable\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cSorry to bother you\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cYes, another follow up, sorry\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t shoot yourself in the foot by implying what you have to say isn\u2019t valuable to your prospect.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re convinced your product is worth their time, you have no reason to apologize.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>#7: \u201cI\u2019m not sure if you saw my previous email.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a hint: they did.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em>\u201cFollow-up emails often feel unnatural and uncomfortable \u2014 nobody wants to be a nag. So, we pepper our follow-ups with justifications like this. If an executive is reading your follow-up, they almost certainly read your first one and didn\u2019t respond for a reason.\u201d<\/em><\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saleshacker.com\/cold-email-executives-phrases-to-avoid\/\">Drew D&#8217;Agostino<\/a> | Sales Hacker&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of beating around the bush with a half-hearted check in, go for something more straightforward. Just restate your value prop or make the follow up email more unique and personalized.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>#8: \u201cHope you\u2019re staying healthy and safe.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What started as a good thought has turned into a coronavirus cliche.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Work Calls in this New-Normal [Quarantine]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WMvJTXxDsUo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the very least, switch it to the end of your email. It will seem more genuine <em>after <\/em>your pitch instead of a formality you have to get through.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same goes for the more generic: \u201c<strong>I hope you\u2019re doing well.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a precious second, wasted. Instead, get to the point as quickly as possible.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\u201cI\u2019m writing because\u2026\u201d, or&nbsp;<\/li><li>\u201c[name] at [place] recommended I get in touch with you.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your prospects will appreciate it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Pro Tip: Don\u2019t Forget About Personalization&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A great cold email is just as much about what you <em>do <\/em>include as it is about avoiding those off putting phrases.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever you do, make sure every single cold email you send is personalized to the recipient and audience you\u2019re sending it to.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Someone who receives dozens of cold emails a week will be able to tell if you simply copy\/paste the same email to thousands of prospects.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I hate zero personalization,&#8221; Paolo Campisi told us (Paolo is Managing Partner at Elementary Ventures). &#8220;It&#8217;s always easy to see right through a copy and pasted cold email that was blasted out to a thousand people.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s annoying, in other words. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"512\" height=\"185\" src=\"https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-6.png 512w, https:\/\/wiza-edge.b-cdn.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cold-email-example-6-300x108.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever phrases you <em>don\u2019t <\/em>include, make sure you <em>do <\/em>include:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Their name and company name. <\/strong>\u201cHey there\u201d and \u201cGreetings\u201d just won\u2019t cut it these days (did they ever?). Use your <a href=\"https:\/\/wiza.co\/blog\/how-to-export-leads-from-linkedin-sales-navigator\/\">lead lists<\/a> and variables to name drop in the first line \u2014&nbsp;maybe even the subject line.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>A specific point of (shared) interest. <\/strong>How did you come across this particular lead? If you\u2019re sending to a smaller list, take time to check for mutual connections and interesting content on LinkedIn. For larger lists, make mention of what one of your search criteria (\u201cJealous of the sunshine you\u2019re getting over there in California\u201d).&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Your tailored value prop. <\/strong>Yes, you\u2019ll need to include your pitch in the email. But you should still make it about <em>them<\/em> as much as possible. If you include something \u201cI think we can mutually benefit,\u201d say <em>how <\/em>and <em>why. <\/em>Instead of \u201cI\u2019ve taken a deep dive into your business,\u201d mention a few quick points from their customers or challenges. Your best bet is to turn it into a question: \u201cDo you think Wiza could you help you pinpoint promising leads in the shaken up events industry?\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How do <em>you <\/em>win new deals through cold email?
