But it\u2019s not exactly seen as an area ripe for innovation.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are some sales teams missing out on opportunities by sticking with the same, tired outbound strategy? Can sales and marketing teams update their process to create effective cold email?<br><br>The short answer is: yes and yes.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the longer answer, let\u2019s dive in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>5 Signs Your Cold Email Strategy Needs Reviving&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wiza.co\/blog\/3-cold-email-quick-wins-to-jumpstart-2020\/\">Cold emailing<\/a> leads can be very effective. For brands set on rapid expansion, outbound emails are critical to reach a new target audience. But only if you do it right.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And creating effective cold emails is more difficult than it sounds. It\u2019s no longer sufficient to just scrape a list of 10,000 leads and copy\/paste the same message to all of them. You\u2019ll go right to the \u2018junk\u2019 folder and get discouraged on outbound efforts before you gain any momentum.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cold email as a strategy is not dead. But plenty of cold emails are DOA \u2014&nbsp;or before you even hit <em>send<\/em>.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to know if your cold emails aren\u2019t going to work:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Your email is too complicated. <\/strong>You try including plenty of links, an authoritative signature\u2026 maybe even a video. But overly complicated, long emails tend to get ignored. First things, first: simplify your initial email. Use just one font, don\u2019t include any social media links, and make it plain text. You want the recipient to be focused on one thing: your CTA.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Your subject line doesn\u2019t capture attention.<\/strong> This is your leads\u2019 first impression. Your subject line should be catchy, relevant to your leads industry or role <em>and<\/em> hint at value. Make it unique and punchy. Some successful subject lines I\u2019ve used are \u201cSales Nav?\u201d, \u201cQuick question\u201d and \u201c12 percent\u201d (to tease the response rate from my campaigns).&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>You don\u2019t personalize your cold emails.<\/strong> Personalization is the key to a successful cold email campaign. It skyrockets open rates and draws your leads in. Including a first name in your greeting is the bare minimum; go further by mentioning their company, industry challenges, pain points of their role, etc.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Your cold email lists are not targeted. <\/strong>The worst thing you can do is try to \u2018reach\u2019 more people by emailing a list of 10k+ leads all at once. There\u2019s no way you\u2019re speaking to the unique value your product offers your leads with a list that large. Instead, narrow your lists by role, seniority, geography, industry, past companies and more. By tying your message to <em>their <\/em>experience, you\u2019ll get much better results.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>You don\u2019t have a consistent cold email process. <\/strong>You can\u2019t expect to send 500 emails and fill your pipeline overnight. Effective cold email is about setting up a process that keeps your pipeline full. You\u2019ll have to experiment with whether that means 100 emails\/week or 200 emails\/day.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>3 Reasons Effective Cold Email is Possible&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not yet convinced? Here are three major reasons effective cold email should still have a part to play in any sales and marketing strategy.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>The numbers show cold email is still an effective outreach method.<\/li><li>Personalization is better \u2014and easier \u2014 than ever.<\/li><li>LinkedIn Sales Navigator can support outreach to tens of thousands of leads.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3>The stats don\u2019t lie<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/wiza.co\/blog\/cold-email-response-rate\/\">average cold email response rate<\/a> is less than stellar: just 1%.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But no one ever aims to be average, and effective cold email campaigns can see much higher numbers. In a test conducted by Jon Youshaei (founder of EveryVowel) and Shane Snow (co-founder of Contently), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3036672\/what-we-learned-from-sending-1000-cold-emails\">45.5% of their cold emails were opened<\/a> (out of 1,000 emails sent).<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/wiza.co\/blog\/cold-email-case-study\/\">one of our own experiments<\/a>, we saw almost 90% of our leads open the email and 22% take the time to respond.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating an effective cold email takes time, persistence and experimentation. But it <em>is <\/em>possible for businesses of all shapes and sizes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Personalization works<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important factors in that case study from Youshaei and Snow was personalization. Personalizing your emails can <a href=\"https:\/\/woodpecker.co\/blog\/sales-email-statistics\/\">increase your response rate by 100%<\/a>. In one experiment, Woodpecker found that emails with a lead\u2019s name and\/or company received more than twice as many replies.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we don\u2019t mean <em>just<\/em> using the prospect\u2019s first name in the first line of the email.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTactics for optimizing sales emails are well and good,\u201d Snow says. \u201cBut they\u2019re not as important as personalized research and sender\/sendee fit.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, take the time to segment your lists and research your prospects. Instead of sending the same template to 10,000 leads, create a unique email for each type of decision maker you\u2019re reaching out to. Speak to the challenges they face in their role, your observations on the industry as a whole, or which competitors they could stand out from.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personalization works.
